CAPPING CEREMONY
THE COMPLETE PROGRAMME.
The capping ceremony in connexion with Canterbury University Collego is this year to /be run under the joint control of the - Professorial Board, the Board of Governors, and the Students' Association, in placo of, as in tho past,' being directly under the control of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The function is to take place on tho evening of Thursday, June 18th, at 8 o'clock, in the College Hall. The programme will start with the usual procession of the Board of Governors, the Professorial Board, and the graduates of the year. The massed students of the hall will sing a topical processional hymn, and after this there will be' a speech by the guest of tho evening, who, it is hoped, will ho a member of the Cabinet. The public congratulations of the students will bo received by the guest of tho evening, after which there will he a suitable song by tho students, and a short address by the chairman of tho Professorial Board. This will conclude the function. Afterwards, in the Art Gallery, the diploma ball will he held. On Friday morning a procession through the streets will be the chief object of interest. This will start from the College at 10 o'clock, and at 10.20, in the Square, the freedom of the city will be conferred upon the Studens Rex by his Worship the Mayor (incog.). Tho Students' Band will be in evidence, and the wits of the College will deliver the usual political speeches from the balconies of ono of tho Squaro hotels. . Visits will afterwards bo paid by the Collegians to the refreshment bureau, and also to the various High Schools, including St. Margaret's College and Christ's College. In the afternoon, when the Senate function has usually been held, it is proposed this year to make a tour of the city, arrayed in gowns and mortar hoards, *'n order to impress upon the imblic mind the essential seriousness of tho scholastic lifo of the student. This procession will be headed by the band, playing the "Dead March," "Yip-i-addy," "The Soldiers' Chorus" from j Faust, and other ragtimo measures. In tho evening the whole wit of the College will be compressed and packed into the Theatre Royal, in order to carry to a satisfactory conclusion the capping carnival, which opens at 7.43. Tho programme for that ceremony . lias been carefully prepared, and will be issued shortly. Saturday night, in the same place, will also bo given over to the students.
On Tuesday of next week the groat sporting event of the College year will be held on Lancaster Park, when the College first fifteen meet the first fifteen of Otago University. For twenty-one years this match has been played between the two Universities, and Canterbury has been on top only onco in that time. T.Uis happened two years ago. As in previous years the number of persons wishing to bo present at the Reception of the Graduates has been much greater than tho number of seats available, the Professorial Board has decided this year to issue tickets only to those who apply for them.
