MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The list anniversary of the Cambridge terrace Church was celebrated on Sunday, when large congregations attended at all sorvioee. In the niorninar the Rev. J. Cocker preached. In the afternoon the Rev. P. Knight, 8.A., de.ivered an address on "Opening tho Old Wells and Digging New Ones." A musical programme waa contributed by Mci-dwnes Vizej, Rhodda, Chaplin, and Mr Rhcdda. x\t the evening service tlie pastor of the church, the Rev. B. _IV(_cn, preached from the text Rom. 1, 16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ." A duet wuh sung by Mr and Mrs Rhcdda, and a polo by Miss Ford. At the c.loso of tho service, the organist, Mi»s Stringer, played the "Dead March in Saul" while -the congregation stood, in sympatliy with those who hav~ 1 -est relatives and friends through thc shipping disaster on the St. Lawrence.

Iho annual social and dance of th© Waltham Ladies' Rr.d Men's Amateur Swimming Clubs was hold in the Svdenbam Football Assembly rooms hist week, when thero were 110 couple-, present. The arrangements were complete in every detail, and this was due to the effort- of the joint -ecrctarice, E. Bainbery and Mr Jas. Clemens, •lne pnzes won during the seaeon were presented. Mr C. Kent waa presented with a silver oof Too jug in appreciation of his services to the Ladies' Club as hon. instructor.

At a meeting of tho Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club, Mr Beards ley (president) occupied the chair. Th© Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey wrote ctaiing he would be unable to visit the club's champion show. It waa decided to ask Mr T. H. Davcy, M.P- to officially open the exhibition. Th© Art Union Committeo reported progress, and the Board of Control reported that tho authorities governing King Edward Barracks had granted, the use of the building for an extra seven days to permit the . Government Agricultural Department to erect its winter show display. A number of applications for space were considered and referred to tho executive.

A meeting of the Junior Philatelic Society of Now Zealand waa .held in the Boys' Gordon Hall last evening, the president, Mr W. J. Wil-on, presiding. Six new members were elected and ono resignation received. Jt was decided to hold a debato at, the next meeting on th© subject, 'That it is more advisable to collect obsolete etam-s than current issues.*- Messrs VV. J. WiW and K. X.. Watts displayed tl»eir collections of stamps, which were much appreciated by th© members. A special meeting of tho Grand Lodge of Canterbury District, United Ancient Order of Druids, was held in the Druids' Hall on Saturday evening, when a charter wa_ p_eeented constituting Canterbury a Grand Lodge instead of a District Grand Lodge, ine following distinguished visitors from Australia were present:—Supreme Grand Prudent Bro. Beauchamp (West Australia), Supreme Grand Vice-President Bro. Richardson (South Australia), Supremo Grand Secretary Bro. Barry (New South Wales? Supreme Grand Guardian B ro . Shield, ffaemanm) P.GJP. Bro. Chipper and G.P. Bro. Roberta (West Australia), G.P. Bro. Goldstein (New South Wales), and PGP Bro. Listen (Victoria). Supreme Grand 'President Bro. Bcauoh-mp installed Grand President Bro. Neat© as head/of the Druids in Canterbury. G.P. Bro. Neate then installed Hie other offioers to their various positions in the Grand Lodge aa follow:—Grand Secretary, Bro. T. Walker; Grand Treasurer Bro Joweey; Vice-Grand President, Bro. R, Walls; Grand Guardian, j*ro. Baty.

A meeting of the Old Lvttelton Navals' Association waa held in tho Oddfellows' Hall Lyttelton, last evening, in order to clear up certain misapprehensions in regard to qualifications for membership. Lieutenant-Colonel Joyce presided, and thero was a good attendance. It was stated that members of tho old body (the present having been in existence for only three years) were eligible to join, and a number of those present signified 'their intention of enrolling. Another question discussed wan the advisability of joining the National Reserve. A member present. Baid enrolment waa a simple matter, but the Lyttelton Navals would prefer to take an active part and be a second line of defence. After a general discussion the matter was referred to the committee to deal with.
