A ROTORUA RESIDENT DROWNED

(SPECIAL TO "THE TRESS.") GISBORNE, June 1. Mrs Hailey. mother of Mr A. P. Hailey, of Gisborne, was a passenger by the Empress of' Ireland, and was lost when tho vessel foundered. . Mrs Hailey, who was formerly a resident of Rotorua, left New Zealand in March, 1913, for Vancouver, where t-he has been spending some time with her daughter-in-law. On May 21st Mrs Hailey left Vancouver to join tho Empress of Ireland at Montreal. On receipt of the news oi' tho disaster, Mr Hailey cabled to his relatives in Vancouver, asking ii' his mother had joined the steamer, and if so, was she among thoso waved. This morning he received tho distressing news that Mrs Hailey was a passenger by the steamer, and tn at there was no hope of her having been rescued.
