SOUNDING THE "CHARGE"
A banquet, over which. M. Poincaro, the French President, presided, was given last month in Paris in honour of the bugler Rolland, the famous hero of Sidi Brahim, who is now ninety-four years old
The heroic action' which earned for him the Cross of the Legion of Honour was per«srmed during the conquest of Algeria. Holland, who was serving under General Bugeaud, had been taken prisoner by Abd-el-Kader, and on August 3rd, 1845, in the heat of the battle of Sidi Brahini, Abd-el-Kader ordered him to 6©und the retreat in the hope that' confusion might be sjpread through the French ranks by his call* ReSand took his bugle and sounded the "charge" with all 'tis strength. The French troops dashed forward in an irresistible rash and captured the enemy's positions., ' ' Holland himself, though severely wounded, succeeded m escaping, and »'a recognition of his heroism General ordered hire to drive, on a gun carriage past the massed troops, who saluted him as though he were "■"Tien-inn them.
