BOATS SENT AWAY FOR HELP

SYDNEY, May 17
Tile steamer Prinz Sigismnnd brought a portion of tho crew of tho tramp steamer Cairnhill from the Bismarck Archipelago. Tho Cairnhill left Nauru Islands on .larch 27th for Germany. When sho was four days out tho tail-shaft broke, and for nino days the engineers made unavailing attempts to repair it.
If was decided to send boats to' Rabaiil, in German New Guinea, for assistance. Threo boats in chargo respectively of tho chief and third mates and the boatswain, containing twentyfour men, including nineteen Chinese firemen, departed, leaving Captain Moodio, the second Biate, and tho chief and fourth engineers and tho chief steward aboard tho Cairnhill.
The boats met a severe storm and were separated. After being buffeted tor over a week and suffering much from exposure and shortage of water and food, all reached Rabaul, where tho Chinese and the chief mate remain to assist in the search for the Cairnhill, which, when the boats left on the 9th April, was 150 miles north of New Mecklenburg.
