CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of tho Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, the president, Mr E. G. Staveley, ia the chair. The report of the Joint Importers' and Exporters' Committees was adopted. In connexion with tho letter from the Department of Commerce aeking that suggestions should be made witii reference to trade reports, it was re " commended that reports be asked for from the United btates, Argentina, Panama, Canada, and Kussia, and in addition that reports be obtained from the various British Trade Commissioners. The committee had no suggestion to make -with reference to the code for Home market quotations as to the form, but recommended to the .Department of Commerce that information be obtained from merchants engaged in the various trades. Tho District Traffic Manager of Railways wroto asking lv. references to correspondence on tho subject of the method of giving receipts and handling of cargo. It was decided to reply that a case where a clean receipt was not given was forwarded in February, 1908, and the matter of handling cargo has been the subject of various deputations to Ministers.
Tho reply to the letter from the .New YorK Chamber of Commerce on the subject of Internation.il Commercial Arbitration, that the Chamber was in accord with the sentiment, and -would consider in what manner its adoption could bo forwa:«Jed, submitted by the sub-cornmittce, ivas approved.
The Decimal Association wrote that there was no ndrsinee in the direction of legislation, but it was quite within tho bounds of possibility that ono of tho oversea Dominions might shortly announca independent action. It was desired to know tho present attitude of tho Chamber towards the metric system. Jt was decided to reply that the Chamber hnd a I v. - ays supported the systGm, and had not changed its opinion, and to point out that it is understood that an Act has been passed authori»iiig tho introduction or the .system on the consent of tho Governor-in-Coun-cil being obtained.
The Secretary of the Department of Commerce forwurdad extracts from a letter from Mr Barraclough, of Salt Lake City, asking for information as to *trado conditions and prospects for opening a manufactory tor wood and stool ofßco filing equipment. It was agreed that the president confer with the president of tiie Industrial Association and forward reply.
Correspondence was received on the question of dist : nguishing stripes on wool-packs, several of the Chambers of Commerce br ; n«i:ig the matter under the notire of the local Wool .Brokers' Associations.
The Acting-Director of the Technical Collego wrote asking the Chamber to contribute as usual to the funds of the College. It was decided to increase the amount to £15 15e.
The British League wrote asking the Chamber to forward items of general commercial interest, which would bo published in the "British Empire Review." It was decided to write to the Department of Commerce asking if a similar communication had been received, and in what manner the request was being complied with. The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote asking what was being done in connexion with this matter and also with reference to appointing a representative. A reply was ordered to bo sent that Mr Gilbert Anderson had been appointed the representative, and that the Department of Commerce was boing comrrruni-cnted with,in -reference to the items of commercial interest.
Tho president of the Chamber of Commerce in Paris wrote, inviting .the Chamber to appoint delegates at the sixth International Congress of Chambers of Commerce to be held in Paris in June. Messrs G. Anderson and H. J. Marriner having been ap].>ointed, it was decided to communicate by cablecram with the Chain!>or of Commerce in Paris, and Mr Anderson.
The Napier Chamber of Commerce wrote, suggesting that the General Manager of Railways should be asked to arrange for passenger tickets to be sold to be used on any future date, and also that the time* for checking passengers' luggage should be reduced. It was also suggested that iirrangpments might bo made to licer.so outs id o porters to act on the platform. Tho first two suggestions wore supported by the council, but it was not considered that the suggestion with regard-to the outside porters would be satisfactory Th« letter wps referred tn the rommit.t.ce who have the matter of interviewing the General M.nnappr of Raihvavs in hand.
