TIMARU CARPENTERS' DISPUTE.
AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT.
(erEciAL to "tub yaraa.") TIMiUtU, April 20. The dispute between the Carpenters' and Joiners' Union and the Timaru buildors was heard by Mr J. It. Triggs to-day: Au agreement on all point* was arrived' at.. It was agreed to an award being framed to. provide for a 44-hour week j eight horns on 6ve days and four on Saturday; wages, Is 6d per hour; overtime at time and a quarter for the first two hours' time, and time and a. half afterwards, till 10 p.m., double time thereafter and on Sundays and on stated holidays. Piecework is prohibited, except for stairbuilding. For country work, 2s per day extra is to bo paid, workmen to be conveyed to and from work at employers' cost. The apprentice clause was delnted, and the rates of pay fixed as follow: —First year, 10s weekly; second, lfo; third, 20s; fourth, 2os; fifth, 355. The usual under-rate and preference clauses were adopted. The Timaru Harbour Board are to be allowed to vary the hours of work to the <!onstrubtion and maintenance -of wharves, but the hours worked are not to exceed forty-four. Freezing works aro to he exempted.from the operation of the suburban and country work clauses. The award is to remain in fore© for three years.
