A CASE OF PELLAGR AAT AUCKLAND.
DEATH OF THE PATIENT

AUCKLAND, March 19,
Dr. Maguiro, medical superintendent of the. Auckland Hospital, reported to the Board that a female patient, fortyfour years of age, was under treatment for pellagra. He stated that it would be a great calamity if it gained a footing in this Dominion. The disease was not contagious. Dr. Maguire stated that pellagra was formerly supposed to be caused by the consumption of diseased or fermented maize, but lately the well-known observer. Dr. iSambon, had propounded the theory that the disease was caused by infection brought by a midge closely allied to our sandfly. * The disease affected eliiefly the skin, alimentary tract, and central nervous system, was generally of a chronic nature, and hnd been proved to terminate in insanity or general debility. He had seen only one other case in Auckland. Later. The woman who has been in the Auckland Hospital suffering from pellagra is dead. She spent ai] her life in TVaihi and Auckland, and it is a mystery how she contracted the disease.
