TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.
Sir, —At the Council meeting last night, when the matter of the annual grant to the Art Society for the purchase of pictures for the permanent gallery was being discussed, the Mayor remarked that in last year's purchase, "Up for Repairs," the men working on the boat furthest from the spectator were larger than those nearer the spectator. As this criticism, coming from our chief citizen (although he confesses he knows very little about Art) may do some damage to the reputation of one of our best artists, I write to say that I have carefully examined the picture, and find that the figures are perfectly right. If his Worship cares to meet mc in the gallery, I shall be pleased to measu»"« the figures with him, and when I have conviuced him of his error I am quice sure, from what I know of the Mayor, he will make the amende honorable to the artist. —Yours, etc.. W. MENZIES GIBB. . March 17th.
