CITY COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
The City Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr H. Holland), Crs. W. H. Cooper, J. R. Hayward, A. Morton, A. M. Loasby. Geo. Scott, J. McCombs, M.P., H. Hunter, W. Miller, F. Burgoyne, A. S. Taylor, A. Williams, H. J. Otley, H. D. Acland, H. B. Sorensen, and Jas. McCullough. Accounts amounting to £12,-_._ 7s 7d were passed for payment. The Mayor stated that he had given permission to tho Sumner Branch of the Royal Life-saving Society and tho New Brighton Surf Club to take up street collections on April 11th. He thanked the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. B. Sorensen) for the manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the city during his absence. The Under-Secretary of Public Works forwarded a copy of a '"Gazette" notice exempting portions of the southern side of Clare road from the provisions of section 117 of tho Public Works Act, 1008. The letter was received. The director and secretary (Mr J. H. Howell) of the Christchurch Technical College, wrote asking tho Council to contribute to the funds of the College.' Cr. Cooper moved: —"That the sum of £300 be granted." Cr. Acland seconded. Cr. Hunter entered a protect against this method of raising money for technical education, which, he snid. ought to be provided out of the Consolidated Fund. (Hear, hear.) The motion was agreed to. The secretary of the Social Democratic Party wrote urging that the Christchurch City Empowering Bill should be re-introduced next session. The matter was referred to the By-laws Committee. Th'? By-laws Committee recommended that, in respect to the claim on behalf of Mi.NS McGovorn for £70 as compensation for not being allowed to build up to the boundary of her land in Brougham street, the 6um of £50 be allowed without prejudice, the strip of laud in question to be transferred to the Council. Mr R. Hepworth was appointed the Council's assessor on the Assessment Court. The Electricity Committee recommended that the following teuders be accepted :—Transformers, the British Electric Transformer , Co., £3035 4s; marline, Messrs Tumbull and Jones, £177 9s (if not supplied in balls approximating 21bs, then the tender of .Messrs J. J, Niven and Co., £181 6s Bd, to be accepted): tape, Messrs A. and T. Burt, £79 10s; rubber mats, Messrs Tumbull and Jones, £?G 8s 4d (not the lowest ten'.er by £2 5s 4d, but the sample contains 10 per cent moro rubber); enamelled iron tablets. Messrs Richardson and MeCabe, £113 2. Gd; insulators, Messrs Tumbull and Jones, £249 15s (3d. The Committee reported having purchased a motor-car for the use of the electrical department. The report was adopted. | Replying to a question, Cr. Taylor (chairman of the Electricity Committee) stated that he did not know if tho Government would be ready to supply current from Lake Coleridge on May Ist, or on August Ist. If the contractors for the switchboard and converters delivered them to contract date, the city would be ready to reI ceive tho current.
