"PROUD-OF MY CITY."
TO THK EDITOR OF "THE TBESS. , * Sir—"Thrift's" letter in your issue of this morning was very much to the noint I also am proud of my city, but I am not so proud as to feel no pain when I pay my rates, and I have lone felt that a very substantial econi Ls open to Christchurch in the extended use of tar-macadam. Here it is in a nutshell: Water-bound surface wears easily, costs a lot for waterin« and has soon to be renewed, whereas tar-macadam resists wear, is better without watering, and will last twenty years with only an occasional thin coating of tar to maintain its fine-quality surface. If ire wish to reduce the rates we shall greatly increase our purchases of tar, and extend rapidly our mileage of tar-macadam. AVo shall then have lessxates, less mud, less dust, but more residents. Wo already have a beautiful city that is the admiration ard envy of all visitors, and /every inch of improved road that goes down will serve as an additional attraction to peoplo to cast in their lot with ours.' Many of us don't seem to know what a good wicket wo are on.—Yours, etc., A TRADESMAN. March 16th.
