The old Sant Ilario gelding, Sea King, has been re-commissioned by E. Scoullar, and is being hacked about prior to going to the tracks to be got ready for the autumn fixtures. After the Redclyffe Hack Welter at Napier Park on Friday, A. Tho West Australian Trotting Association has held five meetings under electric light on successive Saturday nights, and the sport seems to have "caught on." Good attendances are recorded, and although they give £200 | a meeting, a profit has been shown | over each. The Association intend to continue these meetings until the weather gets too cold. The Achilles horse Achilledes had a narrow escape from death at Picton last week. When being shipped for home at the conclusion of tho Nelson Meeting, he fell between the wharf and the steamer. After being some time in the water a sling was got round him, and he was hoisted back on to the wharf with no more damage than the loss of n considerable amount of skin. The Riccarton-owned stallion Bonny Glen broke through from his own paddock into an adjoining one containing two mares and two geldings the other day. The geldings—one of them the hunter -Silver Blaze and the other a fierce old trap horse—resented the intrusion. Fortunately tho combatants were separated before much damage was done. A. Oliver, the well-known flat-race jockey, bad quote a number of mounts at the Wanganui Trotting Club's An- ) inial Me.ling a fortnight ago and the j Manawatu Trotting Club's Annual Meeting last week but was unsuccessful in landing a winner at either fixture, though he finished in a place on I'iore than one occanon. In the Electric Handicap at Palmerston North last week he rode Mansconita, who got tangled in her gear near the post and stumbled and threw her jockey. Evidently Oliver escaped unhurt, for he had a mount in the last race, in which he rode Uniform into third place.
