AUSTRALIAN TEAM AT AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, March 4.
The flwimraing gala which is being held under the auspices of tho Auckland Centre oi tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, and which is made notable by the presence of half-a-dozen Australian crack swimmers, including the champions' Harold Hardwicko and Mias* Fanny Durack, opened last night. MUs Durack missed a place m her heat of the ladies' 36yds da«h by a bare touch, after giving away ten seconds to tho young Jcdy who beat her. Tho meeting of Champion, tbe ±*Tew Zealand crack, and Harold Hardwicke, the tho Australian champion, in tho 220 yds handicap excited tbo chief interest. Both were in the first beat, Champion having a start of Jtsec. The New - Zealander trudged nway with a quick stroke right from the jump, whereas Hardwicko did the first hundred' yards with an exhausting crawl stroke, which, however, brought him to Champion's heel, whereon he changed to a long, clean, steady trudge, and though he was kicking only two to Champion's three, he forged nn inch by inch, drawing level at 200 yards. There was just a touch in Hardwicke's favour at the last turn, which he increased to a foot at the winning rope. In the final Champion did not compete, and Hardwicke was just beaten by C. Sinton, who had lOsec start. LINWOOD CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the Linwood Amateur Swimming Club was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs A. J. Flanapan (chairman), E. Spencer, G. Phillips, H. J. Bnwifcer, D. F. Coulter. XV. Jones, J. A. Wilson, J. Wilson, and H. R. Matthews,. Final arrangements were made in connexion with the club carnival, to be held next Saturday. ; The heats of the 100 yards were swum off last evening, tbe following being tbe results:— First heat: A. J. Flanagan 1. L. Coulter 2. Second heat: R. T. Coulter 1. C. Johnston 2, 0. Davison 3. Third heat: H. R. Matthews and D. F. Coulter (dead heat) 1. E. Pulley, H. J. BowJW. and A. V. Whitta also started. The final will be swum on Saturday, carnival day. / NORTH CANTERBURY CLUB.
