MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met last night. Present—Mr H. P. Bridge (chairman). Meedames Turner, Grose, Atkinson, MeFarlane, Mies H. M. Cocks, and Messrs D. B. McLaren, J. H. Parker, T. C. Field, and W. J. Trusttum (secretary).

Mr Parker reported that daring a recent visit to Australia he had found much evidence of cruelty to animals, especially at certain abattoirs. He found tfiat there was ample scope for improvement in the conditions of animals in Australia, especially in regard to the horses on the streets of the largo cities.

The Inspector, Mr R. Weir, reported on the Cases dealt with during February. He had made enquiries at Lytteiton regarding sheep brought from the Chatham Islands and Napier, and suggested that something should be done in regard to the feeding of sheep on voyages of that kind. The resignation of Dr. Alice Moreknd was receivjsd with regret. Mrs S. Ensom forwarded her resignation, as she was leaving for England for two years. In view of her valuable services it was decided not to accept the resignation, bui to grant her leave of absence.

The General Manager of the Tramways wrote in reply to a request from the Society that he regretted the committee of the Board could not see its way to" grant a free pass over the Christchurch tr-anrwayg X"or the Society's inspector. The letter was received, the inspector to appJy for a pass on the trams while in uniform.

In reply to the Society'e letter regarding il»© carriage of dogs on the Suirujer and New Brighton cars, in the case of owners who did not wish to inflict crueiiy on their pets by having to run alongside the the cars, tee General Manager wrote that dogs •β-ere allowed to be carried on tram-cars, but large dogs couJd not be carried on busy tript. Some passengers objected to them, and it was not desirable to encourage tie gractioe.
