THE STEAD CUP.
FIRST ROUm The first round of tho Stead Cup competition was then played. Christchurch (10) beat Rangiora (3). Tho teams were:—Christchurch (Red): Captain Hutton (3), H. Little (2), Tahu Rhodoe (1), C. I'cechcmaker \oack). Rangiora A. (White): H. Eneor (back), M Bailey (2), Owen Hope (3), J. D. McCrackcn (1). The game opened with very fast pay on both e.do3. Rede pulsed their opponents for a ti:ne, but Whites qu:tk!y responded, and after some indecisive play Eneor placed a nice goal. ChaEtcburoh replied soon after with a neat goal, and from a free bit,awarded on a foul, Litt c scored again with a well placed shot. Chrietchiiroh 2, Rangiora 1. The second- spell wae marked by fact op«n play, both sidus bc.ng well matched. Shortly before bell ricg Wliitca were defending, but the spoil closed without further eco:©. Chrislchurch 2, Raugiora 1. The third epell caw R-rds dofo ig fer a minute or two, and Whites just n...aed sewing. Hods th-en forced the pace, end after an uniucky nusa, L:ttie again got the.bull and scored a pretty goal. Christchurch 3, Rangjera 1. On changing ends play kept to mid-field until Rhodes and .Little got away with the ball, the latter scoring with a long-range shot. Christchurch 4. Rangiora 1. The fourth epcll opened with a long attack by Itede, and Littio, who wae piaying , a fine guine, t.x>k tho bail d--wn the fie.d with some lusty strokes, and shot a v.-cil-ckoerved goal. Fatt piay continued, and getting charge of the ball Bailey acd Hopo took it to tfco poets, wheie the latter d.ove it home. The change of ends saw Whites etill attacking, and aitcr a fact run Hope took tho ball from a side shot and planted a fine goal. The performance wae repeated at the opposite end by Eusor. Christchurch 5, Rangiowi i. More open play followed, and after ecveral mid-field rushes Hutton drove in a good goal for Reds. Chrietchurch 6, Bangiera 4. Early in the fifth spell R-cda pressed the attack and Tcechemaker, from tie middle of a ruah, made a long shot wh.cn, just got homo. Aitcr changing ends Reds took the ball down the field and Little ecoicd. Chrietchnrch 8, Rang.ora 4. Whitoe then made the' pace, but Reds saved juet at the post, and took the ball down the field, Rhodes scoring with a well ainvtd shot. Whites just missed scoring, the ball going out as the bell rang. Chxistchurch 9, Rangiora 4. The sixth epell provided a fine exhibition of last, open piay up and down the field, some good hitting b*ing done on both sid«s. Reds had a e.ight advantage and pressed their opponents. Muck indecisive play followed, but jnet after time was called Rhodes ehot a good goal. Chriatchureb. 10, Ranpiora 4. In tho final spell Whites forced the pace, and put in come good club -work. Baiey, who was playing won, took the ball and shot a nice goal. On changing ends Whites made a fast charge and Bailey making a h.t at long range, almoet scored, the ball curving acd passing juet clear of tte post.
