CONDUCT OF SURF BATHERS
A CLERGYMAN'S ALLEGATION
At the meeting of the New Brighton Borough Councjl on Monday, reference was made to\ the statements of tho Her. H. H. MaWiias in the "New Brighton Church Heoord" relative to the conduct of bathers and other frequenters of the beach.
Cγ. Staniland said that the clergyman's statements were a distinct reflection on the Borough Council aa the governing body, for tho conduct of the beach, Hβ very strongly resented them, as they had been made purely on hearsay, lacked verification, and had been most - emphatically denied. There had been • nothing of an imnoral character, and whatever episode ?ad taken place, it was a mile or co 1 eyond the borough boundary, and at ine o'clock at night. Of this there as no shadow of doubt. On the motion of Cr. Staniland, the following resolution was carried:—■ "That this Council very much regrets that the Rev. H. H. Mathias ehould hate deemed «t necessary to publish statements with reference to surf bathing that are not in accordance with facts, and which Teflect seriously on sthe supervision of the foreshore by this Council, the beach and foreshore being under the. control ot the Council." f I Tory careful supervision is now being exercised by the'-Council's inspectors and the local constable, and it is certain that no serious transgressions are prevalent, and that in the future, no serious breaches of decency are likely to arise.
