MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Cambrian Society* St. David's Day celebration was held on Saturday evening, in the V.M.C.A. building. The meeting took the form of a social,/ Mr John Evana presiding over a good attendance. Proceedinge opened with the WeJ&h National ■ Anthem, led by Mrs T. JpneA Musical items were contributed by Mrs Cuddy, Mieeee Davis end Bowden, and Mr and Master F. Squire*. Mias Davie wae tho accompanist. The prize for the best impromptu speech. went to Mr H. M. Williams. In the competition for the best recitation Mr D. James proved the winner. After refreshments had been served, tho Bey. T. A. Williams gave an addseee on "St. Davi3." Messre Williams and Jemee also epoke on "Wales, and the Welsh Nation." Towards the close of the meeting the appointment of officers for the eneuing year was made. Mr Griff Roberts was appointed, president and M"r H. M. Williame viceprfeident. Mr John Evane was re-appointed treasurer. Mt R. C. Jones resigned the secretaryship, and Mr S. M. Parry was appointed in his place. A new committee "wae also formed.
The annual meeting of the Chrietchurch, Orpheus Society was hold on Monday evening. The chair was occupied by Mr J. Cragg, and there was a good attendance of members. The was read by the secretary, Mr J. Firth, and ehowed a credit balance. The officers'elected were:—President, hie WoTeßtp the Mayor;' vioe-pTesidente, the Very Rev. Dean Carrington, Messrs W. Ballantyne, and A. Minty; chairman of committee,'Mr D, Dorm; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Firth; librarian, Mr H. S. Daviei; , auditor,' Mr Reginald Smith: committee. Meedamee John-, son, Dorm, Badley, Mies Knudson, Messrs Burrows, Chaplin, Johnson, Worgan, Whitbam, and Xon ll^ l ' pianist,- Miss Nora Macleodsmith; conductor, Mr J. T, Macleodsmith. Gratification was expressed at tho work of the conductor, the pianist, and,the other officers, and voee of thanks were : ac-. corded them. _ . ~ „ ■ The old LyttcfYon Stevedores' Union held a smoking concert in the Exce'eior Hall, Lyttelton, on Monday evening, Mr <■'• Thorn presiding over an attendance of about 300. During the evening the following presentations were made for services rendered in connexion with the recent strike:—Mr F. .Lurch (president), a
~V,i Mr P. Ellia (secretary of the I general strike committee at Cnristchnrcb), a | clock; Mr E. E. Lansley (secretary of the strike committee at Lyttelton), a gold medal and a silver chain; Mr J. James, a watch; and Messrs J. Toixance and G. WaUrin, each a gold pendant. . . The Knox Church Bend of Hop* met m the lecture hall on Monday evening.
