TRAMWAY ACCIDENTS.
DANGEROUS PRACTICES
The question oi tramway accidents was- briefly referred to at yesterday's meeting of tho Tramway Board. The Works and Traffic Committee reported that twenty minor accidents had been reported during tho month of January. Fivo ot them affected cyclist-, seven were connected with horse vehicles, and seven, were cases of passengers who had alighted from cars in motion, and had come to grief in consequence. In no caso was the Bpard's staff to blame. 'Ihe recklessness of cyclists was such that a larger number of accidents might be expected. The committee was at a loss to understand why, despite warnings, the number of passenger- who siifi'ered hurt through alighting from moving cars, showed no feigns of decrease.
.Air Barr said that the practice of cyclists in riding alongside cars while holding on to the hand-rails was' a very dangerous one. and should be put a stop to at once. He had recently seen a cyclist riding up from Sumner and holding on to a car in
spite of tho repeated warnings of a passenger. The cyclist nearly came to grief several times, and it was only when the passenger threatened to take his name and report him that he desisted.
Mr C. M. Gray also spoke against this practice. He said that it was contrary to the regulations., and the conductors should stop it. The names of offending cyclists should also lie taken by the conductors.
