(TT=23 ASBOCIATIOK TXLEGBAU.) WELLINGTON, February 14. Tho Wellinffton Centre'e swimming carnival wae hold in ideal ■wesAhor bt Tβ Aro Bathe this afternoon. There -was an attendance o! 1000, and large fields in ell events. The Auckland swimmers refused to compete, owing to the Centre declining the Wait-emnta Club'e request for 60 per centof the gate. The public, in ooneequenoc, wore greatly disappointed at not seeing M. Champion compete. Five finished in the mile, -which was won by W. G. Morpcth (Wellington), with a handicap of '6min Ssseo. Th* •cratch man, R. Newman (Wellington), who h«d Smin handicap, swam a great Tace, finishing 20yde behind Morpctb, ond beating , tho Centre's standard time (3Smin) by SOsec. The others finished in the following order: —A. W. Smith, -tain 40sec, 3; W. Sears (Christchurch), Train 45sec, 4. Donovan (14min 20sec) swam on his back tho whole distance, and finished last. The winner's net time ■was 30inin SOsec. '
C. V. Fordham (Swifts Club. Wellington) won the 100 yds, the provincial championship, in 60 1-oth sec, breaking the standard time (fc«scc). In th*i relay race the Canterbury clubs competed, but -were unplaced, the event being won by Tfoorndon A (Wellington)! in 2inin 4is«c. •
