A GERMAN AGRICULTURIST

SOME IMPRESSIONS

An interesting visitor to Christchurch just at present is Dr. R. Esidlich, a German agriculturist, who is spending n holiday in Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Endlich recently conducted experiments in cotton-rais-ing in Egypt, and has travelled extensively in dilforent parts of tho world in connexion with lib researches into tho pollonusation of plants. In tho course of a brief chat with a representative of "The Press, - ' Dr. Endlich expressed somo astonishment that the culture of tobacco was not taker* up in some portions of tho North Island. It was a crop that was grown successfully in South Germany, and from his observations of the climate and soil of the North Island he was of opinion that it could be successfully grown in parts of the North Island.' What had directed his attention to tho matter, ho said, somewhat jocularly, was tho high price of tobacco. His travelling companion. Captain Bonnoton, of the French Army, told him that for the price ho paid in New Zealand for one day's smoking ho could, in Paris, obtain enough tobacco to last him at least five days. In tho Nelson district Dr. Endlich saw a number of orchards, nnd commented on the fact thrtt grass was allowed to grow between the fruit trees. Much better results and better growth were obtainable when tho land was cultivated, ac it allowed of tbe proper aeration of tho soil.

Yesterday afternoon Dr. Endlich visited Messrs J. Montgomery and Co.'s experimental farm on the Lincoln road, and it is probable that during his stay in Christchurch he will inspect some of the experiments conducted by tho Field and Experimental Farms Division of tho Department of Agriculture
