NEW ZEALAND NAVAL TRAINING SHIP.
WHAT IS CONTEMPLATED. (SI'ECIAJ, TO "THK hRESS ") WELLINGTON, Febnwrv 10. Under the Governnmnfs new scheme of naval defence, the Philomel, now in >iew Zealand waters, is to be the ship on which tho Dominion's quota of seamen for the British Navy will be trained. Speaking on the subject to your reporter, tho Hon. Jame.s Allen faid that the Act would be broußht into operation as soon as tho ship had been handed over to the Government which was now in communication with the Admiralty on the subject. The iXuval Adviser to the Government had not yet been appointed, but. a final reply from the Admiralty on both these phases of the question was expected shortly. Mr Allen anticipates that some changes in the crew will be raadc, bo as to make it more adaptable for training purposes.
