MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The fortnightly meeting of tke Star of Woolston Tent, Xo. S7 1.0. R., wni held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Woolston, on Monday mght, Bro. C. T. North in the chair. A visit was received from the Provincial District Council, represented by Bro. I. Holliduy, P.C.R.; Bro. E. A. M. Leaver, P.D.R.; Bro. F. M. Robeon, P.S.; and Bro. A J Nicholas, P.5.F.8., and, after being cordially welcomed by the C.R., officiated for the reet of the evening. The delegates' report on the conference, held on January 31et last, was received, and it waa decided, after coneid'erable discussion, to accept the challenge of the Pride of Christchurch Tent to initiate more new members on v percentage baeje. In the course of a few -words, Bto. Leaver pointed out the advantages of a Juveni'-e Tont, nnd it wae decided to inetitute a Juvenile Branch in Woolston, the following being appointed superintendents: — Broe. Wcleby, Trerise, Round, und Taylor. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Riccarton Lodge, M.U., Bro. "W. Taylor presiding, Bro. E. F. Thompeon tendered his resignation as E.S., which w.s received with regret. Nominations for tho office wore held over till next Lodge night. P.G. Bro. G Green, on behalf of the Lodge, presented Bro. F. Smith with a framed P.G.s emblem. P.G. Bro. G. Gioen was nominated for Deputy CM., and P.G. Bro. C. E. T. Hill and P.G. Bro. G. Green for the executive. The opening meeting for the year of the Sydenham United Band of Hope was held in the Mcthcdiet Hall on Monday, Mr W. Wcet presiding over a record attendance. Adjutant Marshall gave an instructive address on the everyday evils of strong- drink, and the Salvation Army Boys' Band contributed two items in eplendid style. The following also contributed to a good programme:—Recitati>ne, Mitaee E. Robson, H. Chambers, Vera Chamber*, C. Grenfell, Gladys Boyoe, Masters J. Southam and C. Gronfell; vocal solos. Miaeeo Bertha Cooper, Rita Bray, E. Kay, and Mr R. M. Cummins; chorus, Mi» M. Abbott, S. Dickinson, D. Simpson, R, Bray, B. and J. Cooper. The committee decided that future meetings be hold at the various churches or their haJla, in turn, with a view to increasing- the interest in the meetinge. The monthly meeting of the North Xew Brighton Burgesses' Association was hefd on Saturday eveniujj. Mr Gilbert Burns presided over a • good attendance of members. Ihe secretary reported having visited tho chetricl in company with reprcecntativce of the Education Board with reference to a suitable site fox a eido school. It wae decided •to apply to the Council to set aside four acres at the south-west corner of the North Brighton reserve, this bw'ng the site suggested by the membere of the Education Board.\ Dealing yith tramway matters, the meeting was of .opinion that the -time had arrived for the electrification of the Xorth Beach line, and whilitt satisfied with the district's present representation on the Tramway Board, desired to urge, upon the Board the need for having the line electrified without further delay. ' The proposed interview with the general manager was postponed indefinitely, in the hope that electrification would be proceeded with forthwith.' The fortnightly' meeting cf the hoyal City of Norwich Juvenile Lodge, 1.0.0. F., Manchester Unity, was held on Monday, N.G. Bto. A. McCormick presiding over a full attendance of members. It was d<x;dcd to have the names of all P.G.'a placed tc the Merit Board, and t) hold a shooting match next Lodge night. Two quoit matches were got off, which were a Fouroe of pleasure to the members. A committee wae act uo to make arrangements for the winter nighte' entertainments.
