MR CAREY'S CABLEGRAM
STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN OF STRIKE COMMITTEE.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WELLINGTON, December 23,
Mr Agnew, chairman of tho central Striko Committee, referring to an explanation given by Mr E. J. Carey in connexion with the allegalion that he had cabletl-to Sydney advising unions not to give financial assistance to tha strike, made the following statement to a reporter this afternoon:—
"As chairman of tho central Strike Committee, 1 would like to ask Mr Carey how he can bring his action in tho Waihi strike into line with his action in the; present trouble. Is it not a fact that in the ciwse of every motion brought by a delegate on the Council, evon a motion of sympathy, he has fought tooth and nail against that motion being carried? Is it not a fact that last Thursday week there was a motion btougbt. down by the executive of the Trades and Labour Council suspending Mr Carey for twelve months from the Council? In connexion with the cablegram to Australia, tho committee does not deny Mr Carey's right to correspond with personal friends, but it denies him the right, while, posing as an alleged leader of Labour, to communicate with Mr Hughes against the interests of the workers, and use what are not facts. I would like to say, personally.- that if the lily-whites of the Trades and Labour Council (to use Mr Carey's own words), who profess to be Labour leaders, had taken their stand alongside of Labour in this fight, there might have been a different tale to tell today."
