DEATH OF THE EMPEROR
MENELIK
(By Cable. —Press Association—Copyright.) ADIS ABEBA, December 22. The death is officially announced of the Emperor Menelik.
Menelik IL, King of Shoa (born 1842), G.C.8., G.C.M.G., became the supremo ruler of Abyssinia after the death of Johannes 11., Emperor of Ethiopia. Menelik had no direct heir, but he proclaimed as his successor Lij Yasu (or Lidj Eyassu), G.C.V.0., son of Menelik's daughter, Waizaro Shoa Rogga and Ras Mikael. Lij Yasu, owing to the illness of the Emperor Menelik, since 1909 fulfilled the functions generally performed by his grandfather. The political institutions are essentially of a feudal character, analagous to those of mediajval Europe.
