WANTED, A LIBRARY

ADDINGTON DEPUTATION WAITS ON THE MAYOR.

A deputation of members of the Addington Burgesses' Association waited on the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) last evening, with a request for financial assistance from the City Council in the erection of a public library for Addington on the site granted for that purpose by the previous Government. Mr H. ii. Ell, M.P., who introduced the deputation, said that he thought the Biirgesses' Association would be willing to guarantee for two years the interest on, say, a £300 building. Mr \\\ Sheldon, chairman of the Addington Burgesses' Association Library Committee, stated that very generous offers of assistance had been received by his committee. Furniture, to the value of many pounds, ha<l been given, while Dr. Chilton had promised three shelves of valuable books. There was no doubt that a good library and reading room at Addington would be self-supporting. At the same time the Burgesses' Association had no assured finance, and they were not able to pledge themselves to any great extent in the matter of providiiMr a guarantee.

The Mayor pointed ont that the building would have to bo in brick, and would cost probably a good deal more than £300. He could only speak for himself in the matter, and could not nledge the Council in any way. His Worship added that the refusal of the ratepayers to sanction the recently proposed loan had been the cause of the delay in giving consideration to Addington's and other districts requirements. He would instruct the City Surveyor to prepare a _ sketch plans of a suitable building, and this would be submitted to the Addington Burgesses' Association for their approval. As . soon as the land was transferred, the erection of the necessary fence and otßer, improvements would be effected." He would do his best to have a sum placed on the estimates which would provide for the erection of a building which would not disgrace the neighbourhood.
