A WELL-KNOWN AUCKLAND RESIDENT.

(press association telegeam.) AUCKLAND, November 13. Tho death is announced of Mr John Burns, a well-known merchant.

Mr Burns was the resident managing partner of the Ir.rgo hardware firm that 1 :-ears his name. He was born in Giaagow, Scotland, and brought up to commercial life. For a considerable tim« he was in business in his native city, and retired in ISG7. Fifteen years later he went into business in London as one of tho founders of the associated firms of Brown, Douglas and Co., and Wiugnte. Burns and Co. Since November, 1835. ho had been personally identified with the mercantile life of New Zealand, and had resided in Auckland, except during the year 18D6, when he was in London. Mr Burns was an active member of tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce, of which 'he was chairman in 1893 and 1900. Ho was appointed Consul for Belgium at Auckland in 1898.
