SIR GEORGE DAVIES.

(By Cable—Press A?scci3tioE.—Copyright.) HOBAUT, November 13. The death is announced ot Sir George Davies, ex-Speaker of the Assembly.

The Hon. r>tr John George Davies, K.C.M.G.. (cr. UXW;. was appointed (Speaker of the House of Assembly of Tasmania in 1903, and held that position until recently. He had been in Parliament since ISBS, and was Chairman of Committees, IS9-J-ISO3. He was for six years Mayor of Hobart, and was well-known for his great interest in rifle shooting. He captained the Commonweaith rifle teair which won the Kolapore Cup in 1902. He was appointed Lieut.-Colonel, and retired in 1901. Born at Melbourne in 1840, he was a jjartner of Davies Bros., Ltd., proprieiors of the ' Mercury" and the "Tasnianian Mail , ' at Hobart.
