BULLOCK TEAMS DISPLAY

A NOVEL AND- POPULAr.

r.EATURE.

A uovei fcaturo at the Show this year was a parade on the oval of bullock t-eams from the Pcni?;sula. Tho parade proved very popular, being watched with tho greatest interest by many hundreds of spectators. Each team consisted of eight bullocks harnessed to a lorry in command of a driver, armed with a whip many yards long, with which'he flayed unmercifully the" boasts when they refused to do his bidding. It can bo only after witnessing a bullock team at work that one can properly understand th-o phrase ""as thick as a bullock's hide." They say a driver rannot uuiko a bullock team work without a plentiful supply of strong anil lurid language, and there wero critical periods yesterday when tho crowd hung with eager expectation on tho coiuing torrent that threatened to pour from tho drivers' mouths, but in each instance the crisis was avertod, the swelling tide was checked, and the onlookers relapsed into disappointed chagrin. There were two competitions, or.c, tJio beet team of eight bullocks, and tho other, the best, handled team of eight bullocks. Mr R. Latter was the judge. There were tbreo entries. It was truly remarkable iiow the drivers controlled the beasts, taking them round ail sorts of difficult corners with no further assistance than a constant reiteration of "Whoa whoa hack, Dick!" and a plentiful snpply of the sjambok which icll unmercifully upon tho hides of tho stubborn .brutes. Reins wero noticeable by their absence, tlm whip c T id ali tho guiding. It was a great exhibition. E. and J. C. Hay (Pigeon Pay) won tho honours for "tho host team of bullocks, with W. F. Parkinson (Kaitnoa) second, nnd John Chaproan (Littlo River) third. John Chapman's team was-declared to be the befit handled, with W. F. Parkinson's second, and E. aud J. C. Hay's third.
