THEN AND NOW.

MR YOUNG'S CHANGE OF FRONT.

A RESOLUTION RECALLED

Asked by a reporter of the Wellington "Post" if he had an3 T statement to make in answer to Mr Young's references to him at the Newtown park meeting, Mr E. J. Carey, secretary of the Hotel Workers' Union, said:—

"I refuse, even at this stage, to be drawn into a public discussion on the merits of the strike, despite Mr Young's remarks and insulting references to myself. The trouble is that Mr Young and I now differ on a policy matter that we were onco in complete agreement on, as witness the following resolution of the Wellington Trades and Labour Council ia that connexion and in reply to a request from the locked-out miners for financial assistance * —

. " 'Moved by E. J. Carey, seconded by W. T. Young:— "That we agree there is a lock-out on in Reefton, and consider that the Labour Department should have taken a case, if only to test the legal position, and in order to facilitate a settlement afterwards.; but seeing that your union has completely handed over entire control of your dispute to the executive of the NewZealand Federation of Labour, and that that executive is antagonistic to and-opposed to the principles and policy of the United Labour Party, which party this Council has resolved to join, we cannot repommend our affiliated unions to give direct approval of the policy and principles of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, under the guise and in the form of

monetary assistance to your union." "Strangely enough, the only opponent of the rasolution, which was carried on tho voices, was Mr M. J. Reardon.

"As to Mr_Y'ouug's statement about our union striking, that again is simply a piece of bluff. The decision of the executive of the Hotel Workers' Union yesterday has the backing of practically our full membership. There'll bo no strike of hotel workers in our district, or in Dunedin, or iv Christchurch." •
