ON THE WEST COAST.
DEMONSTRATION AT WESTPORT
(VBESS ASSOCIATION' TEkEGUAM.) WESTPORT, November 12. A procession, and demonstration" to commemorate the death of Evans at Waihi was held at Wcstport to-day. Very few. miners camo into town, and as the harbour employees were working, the attendance v.'<as small, only about one hundred being in the procession. .Addresses were- subsequently given in Victoria square before a fair crowd of men, women, and children, by eight Labour leaders, the speakers emphasising that they were not out to talk, sedition. They strongly discountenanced anything in. the- nature of violence,' contending that the fight could be won by fair means. The Government was condemned for its action at Waihi, and also for imprisoning strike leaders, and a motion was carried without dissent, entering an em- | phatic protest and calling on the Government to grant tho unconditional release of the men. Extra police were in attendance, but found no occasion to interfere. It is reported that a mass meeting is beine held at Denniston to-morrow, to urge that tho extra police be recalled. MEETING" OF DENNISTON MINERS. (PRESS ASSOCIATION' TELEGRAM.) "WESiTOiCT, November 12. ■" A mass meeting of Denniston miners was held in the Deiiniston Hall, Mr J. Brown (president) in tho chair. The Chairman made reference to the recent attempt to biow up the brake wheel, and again appealed to the meeting to do its utmost to prevent acts of violence during the strike. ' Mr V. Graham vigorously denounced the attempt on the brake as the work of. a fool or madman. Messrs Hawker, Stokes, and Diamondalso spoke, and strongly condemned such action. If it was the work of a striker, it was diametrically onposed to the interests of the strikers." The meeting unanimously carried the -following resolution: —"That this meeting of the Denniston Miners' Union strongly exhorts its members to refrain from any act of violence or injury to property during the present crisis, and, further, views with grave concern tho recent attempt made upon the brakehead machinery, and pledges itself to assist in every way possible" in preventing a similar act, as our battle can bo fought and won without resorting to such tactics." Locally strike matters remain very quiet and The arrest of tho leaders has produced an ugly feeling among the miners at Runanga and Blackball, and,a big protest meeting is being organised for Saturday.
