FROM " THE PRESS " OF 1863.
WEDNESDAY, XOVEMBER. 11
"The benefits of civilisation are seldom wholly unalloyed; we have got cabs, but we haTe also got cabmen, and the cabmen seem to be of the genuine British breed. A few weeks ago "we had a moving and very reasonable complaint of extortionate charges, and now we hear of an almost equally flagrant case from a different quarter. We believe there are only three cabs in Chrisichurch: two of the drivers have already appeared unfavourably before the public. We are glad that the Resident Magistrate brought the second offender, who demanded os for a ride of 4SO yards, to his bearings yesterday, and trust that the Municipal Council will at the last moment come promptly to our rescue."
