Th« Hon. Sir Charles Bowen, Speaker of the Legislative Council, was a passenger for Wellington last night by the ferry steamer.

Mr It. M. Chadwick, A.M.I. Mech., E., formerly with Messrs A. and T. Burt. Limited, Dunedin, and recently works manager for Messrs J. Niven and Co., Napier, has been appointed that firm's district manager for Hawko's Bay. Mr Chadwick was a few years ago a prominent Otago represontative soccer player.

A large and representative public meeting of citizens from various parts of the district assembled at Hokitika last night for tho purpose of making a presentation of a purse of sovereigns and an address to Mr H. Richards (late Inspector of Mine* for tho Westland, district)- The Mayor of Hokitika presided.

Miss Kathleen Cresswell, who won the grand piano solo at the Wellington, competitions on Monday, is a Christchurch girl,, a pupil of Mr Empson. She secured 146 marks. The prizo was a Chappel grand piano, valued at £130. Mies K. Quill, with 140 marks, was second, and Misa P. Hanifio third with 136 mark*.

Detective-Sergeant Cox. who was married last week, was presented yestqrday morning at the Christchurch Police Station by his. fellow-members of the force, with a bread board in a silver salver, and knife and fork. The presentation was made by Chief-Detective Bishop, who, on behalf of the members of thoiforce, wished Mr,and Mrs Cox much happiness and prosperity. Tho Rev. B. F. Rothwell, of Lyttelton, has been invited to succeed the « V l T ;. R ' as superintendent of t£e Methodist circuit, Blenheim. Mr Richards is completing iris five veare' niinisti-jy. in.
