AN APPEAL TO FARMERS. {PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON . October 30. The Wellington Provincial Executive lof the Farmers' Union, presided over by Mr J. G. Wilson, to-day decided to issue a pamphlet calling upon farmers' sons to volunteer to work on the wharves for the sake of the dairy industry. "Wo must defend oursoives and protect tho fruit of our industry," concludes the circular. A large "proclamation" placard has also been prepared, to be posted up at creameries and centres where young farmers work. This points out the injury the strike will effect to the dairy industry, and contains an appeal from the Defence Committee of the union. It shows that from £3 to £5 a week can bo earned, and that full protection will be given. "We know," it concludes, "the inconvenience this must be at such a season, but at all hazards the industry must bo protected lest it collapse." Forms have been drawn up for the men to sign. They are as tollows:— " I , of , volunteer to go to Wellington if called upon, with ,my horse, to act as special constable to protect free labour loading or unloading vessels. (Signed) ." This is to be sent to the nearest polico station. The enrolling of special constables has been proceeding to-night. Many are offering. PALMERSTON N., October 30. The Farmers' Union Executive held a meeting to-day to arrange a call for volunteers to load and unload farmers' produce, also for volunteers to act as mounted special constables. ELTHAM,, October 30. An organised effort by the Farmers' Union, glairy companies, and other producers is being made to raise free labour hero and throughout Taranaki to assist in handling produce at the various ports.It is expected that there will be a ready response, and that a good number of men and horses will be available.
