PLAINS INUNDATED.

GORE, October 30. Heavy rain for twenty-four hours caused uneasiness in Goro last night. The smaller streams Overflowed, and at McNab's siding the overflow from the Waikaka river submerged the railway line for some distance, and trains were delayed. Latest reports say that the streams aro subsiding. The Mataura river rose some 4ft 6in between 4 p.m. yesterday and 8 a.m. to-day, but the rain has now ceased, and the river is expected to recede. It will require to rise two or three feet higher before it is considered dangerous. Three point ono inches of rain fell locally from Tuesday at 10 p.m. until 9 a.m. to-day. 1 The Waipapi stream rose during the night, and tho water entered a local boarding-house to a depth of two inches. Other residences were not 'affected. The rain has now stopped, and prospects are brighter. At the * Mataura river the waters were 13ft off the suspension bridge at noon, but are expected .to recede during tho afternoon. . AU tho flats in tho vicinity of the creeks are flooded. The main portion, of the paper mills, is not working owing to tho turbine being covered. The Kyles coal-pit is flooded, but the other collieries aro working.
