VARIOUS QUESTIONS OPENED UP. (By Cable.—Proa Aesoeiation.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, October 29. The ''Sydney Morning Herald" says: —"Mr Massey's statement will be received with gratification in Australia, first'becauso it marks a further determination on the part of New Zealand fe> pursno hor patriotic endeavour to make an effectivo contribution to the defence needs of the Empire; and, secondly, because in two important respects it record*- an approximation to the policy of the Commonwealth. Tho statement marks the second stag© in the evolution of that joint and coordinated organisation of Imperial defence in the Pacific, of which the establishment of tho Australian Navy was tho first." "Personal service is of greater moment than a more cash subsidy. We are glad that New Zealand has taken up • this matter with «uch whole-hearted recognition of ita importance The policy of New Zealand will naturally open tip the whole question of co-operation with Australia, and affords a further cogent reason for tho early holding of a defence conference. Advantage will doubtless be taken of the arrangement already made for the training of New Zealand naval cadets at tho Commonwealth Naval College.
"In other matters, whilst there will bo no attempt on the part of tho Commonwealth to interfere with the domestic arrangements of a sister Dominion, every possible means of cordial cooperation for common ends will be heartily wel* corned and reciprocated by Australia."
The article concludes: —"Wo congratulate the Dominion Oft the statesmanlike outlook revealed in the statement."
