OXFORD TRAIN SERVICE.
A public meeting was held in the Town* Hall on Thursday to discuss tise subject of train acceleration and railway matters generally as affecting tho interests of Oxford and surrounding districts. .Mr Campbell, chairman of tho County Council, presided, and thero wore reprosfcntat'ives and- members of tho County Council. WaimakaririAshley Water Supply Board, Farmers' Union. Oxford Traders' Association, and the Oxford A. and P. Association present, together with a good muster of tho general public. Mr Cook read correspondence from the Prime Minister on tho subject of shortening tho tune of tho .journey from Oxford to Ranyiora. in which ho- stated that tho morning train from Oxford could Dβ arranged to leave; fifteen minutes later than at present. This would necossitato cutting off the Eyreton branch, but ho could not sco any way of connecting Oxford with tho 4.30 p.m. train from Chrirtchurch. Messrs O'lfalloran, Cooper, Parish. }Veld, Dallcy. Murray, Meyers, Cook, Wells, and others diccusficd the question from various viewpoints,, and many suggestions were made and means pointed out wherein improvements could be brought about. It v.as propo.-ed by Mr Cooper, seconded by Mr Murray, and carried: —''That the Railway Department be requested to start tho morning train from "West Oxford not earlier than 7.1/5 a.m., and that the evening train arrive at West Oxford ::ofc Inter than 8 p.m." The secretary of.tlio meeting (Mr McCormaek) was reouesttd to convey the resolution to the Prime Minister and nt the <=n»rio time to write io Messrs Burldo. Forbes; and Witty, M.P.'s, requesting rmnrvort in the matter. and also nrtrine; them to obtain a.return from the Rp.ilwr.y Drpartrr.Piit showing the amount of protxb traffic en tho Oxford-P.srgiora branch, as it was felt that owirg"to its increase, part of it should be dealt with in a sp?ciai manner. It was zlro requested that tho Cour.tr Coti-cil shculd, at its next meeting, follow up the subject by making representations to tho G'orcrnment "with a view of helping tho matter forward.
