STATE NURSERIES' OPERATIONS. VALUE OF PRISON LABOUR. (special to "the press. ' / WELLINGTON, September, 2. The annual report on the State nurseries • and plantations was issued today, supplementary to the Land Department's report. It states that over 10,000,000 tree:* were successfully raised in. the four Government nurseries in the year, a little moro than half being in the Rotorua establishment. feSinco the formation of tho nurseries in 1896, over 60,000,000 trees have been sent to the plantations and 3,000,000 to outsido places. The total cost of the seven nurseries (three of which have now been closed) to dato was £117,743. of which, however, £25.323 was represented by permanent works. Tho employment of prison labour on J Wanting operations, says the report, las continued to bo a success. Tlio gross value of work performed by thoso employed during the year was estimated at £2130, averaging > about £70 per man per annum since the system was established.
