MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The musical and elocutionary competitions organised by the Hcathcoto Valley .School Committee were brought to a close on Friday night, when there was a large and enthusiastic attendance. Mr' F. Anderson judged elocution and Mr Thompson music. For tho impromptu speech the subject was, "What do you consider the most suitable age for marriage?" Eight, competitors addressed tho audience. Mr Doolan was awarded first place, Messrs •Stewart and Lewin second, and Mr Fitzgerald third. Mr Robertson secured first place for the Irish song, Miss Oi'tgen second: the baritone solo was won by Mr Shadbolt, Mr G. Wilson second. In the original story competition Mrs Grant secured first place and Mr R. Bell second. Thanks were accorded the donors of trophies, the judges, accompanists, competitors, and the ladies and gentlemen who had worked ko strenuously for the euccess of the competitions. After the distribution of trophies, a number of ladies generously supplied and dispensed refreshments.
