CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Christchurch City Council mot last night when there were present the Mayor (Mr H. Holland), and Crs. A. "Williams, H. Hunter. AY. Millar, F. Burgoyne, J. McCombs, A. S. Tavlor. •J. It. Hnvvard, H. 15. Sorensen. A. it. Loasbv, H. l>. Aeload. W. H. Cooper, Geo. Scott, and J. McCullough. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. A. Morten and T. Dent. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Tom- Barker applied for por mission to speak on Labour matters in the open air. Tho letter was received. Mr W. Lin ton applied for permission to hold open-air gospel meetings on Sunday nights at tho corner of Dover and Trafalgar streets, St. Albaiis. Cr. Taylor said that permission could not bo given, other than in respect of Cathedral square according to the bylaws. If people spoke elsewhere they took tho risk of obstructing traffic. The letter was received. Tho Linwood Citizens' Association asked for permission to mako ii charge to Linwood Park on September 27th. when it was projwsed to hold a football match to raiso funds to build a rotunda and dressing-rooms. Cr. Loasby moved that permission be granted for threo days. Cr.- Scott seconded the motion. Cr. Loasby explained that the Linwood Citizens' Association wero doing their utmost to raiso funds to improve tho park, and arrangements were to bo mado for the holding of big matches there on days when a charge could be made. Permission was granted for September 27th. Tho Lyttclton Town Clerk advised ! that a oonforenco of delegates of local bodies interested would be held on September 18th, to consider the Lyttolton-Christchnreh road proposal. Tho Mayor said the conference was to appoint a deputation to wait on the Government. The. Council would be involved in no liability. The Mayor and Cr. Acjaiul ' were appointed to represent tho Council at the conference. WATER SUPPLY. The Water Supply Committee reported that the city engineer advised that in tho near futuro it would he necessary to construct another and a much larger reservoir, and a. special committee had been set up with a view to selecting a site. Tho committee also reported that streets to the total length of 4 miles (37 chains in St. Albans Ward were unroticulated. some of tho streets having bf>en recently laid out, and a large number of new buildings were being erected. Tho engineer estimuted the cest of reticulation at £3000, and the committee was now considering tho question of the host means of raring the money to carry out the necessary work. The report was adopted. THE TOWN HALL. Cr Williams asked when tho Town Hal! Special Committee proposed to submit its report. Cr. McCullougla he had not been ablo so far to get tho committee together, for thero was to*o much othei work to do. However, the committee would' meet shortly to go into the matter' THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Cr. Sorensen reported tliat the Bylaws Committee had met representative** from the Board of Governors of Canterbury College regarding tho Library. Tho College representatives had, however, refused to consider any arbitration proposal, and had also declined to hand over any part of the endowment with the institution. They would not meet the Council representatives on any point, and the conference was a failure. . After discussion it was decided to ask the Finance Committee to go further into the matter.
