TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

The Canterbury Trades and Labour Council met on Thursday evening, Mr F. Burgoyue presiding. New delegates were received and welcomed from the Painters' Union.

Tho Minister of Marino wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's ■ resolution asking for a public enquiry into the question of punishment inflicted on the boys on the training ship Amokura. Tlie Minister stated that thero did not appear to be any necessity for a further enquiry. It is proposed to amend the regulations so as to lay down moro specifically the offences 'for which corporal punishment can be inflicted, and the mode in which to be inflicted. It was decided:— '< "That in the opinion of this Council the reply of the Minister of Marine is extremely unsatisfactory." The Canterbury Women's Institute asked the support of the Council in its request to the Minister of Labour to mako provision for shops and workrooms being heated. It was decided to make representations to the Minister on the subject. . ■ < Arising out of a communication from the Anti-Militarist League it was decided to forward to the Minister. kA> Labour a strong protest against the gami>heei"g of wages ur.der the Defence Act. and to request the co-opera-tion of the other Trades and Labour Councils in the Dominion in the matter. The Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office wrote acknowledging receipt ot the resolution of the. Council on the report of tl-.e Public Trust Offi-.-e Commission, and stnted that it.would rcc'ive careful consideration. The secretary was instructed to ascertain from the' Secretary for Labour if the law permits shopkeepers who close on a public holiday to remain open on Saturday . afternoon of the week in which; they closed for the public holiday. ■''■'. . -;,." ■ It was decided to combine with the other Trades and Labour Councils of tho Dominion in urging upon the Government to introduce a system ot propoHioal rep e-rcntation for the election of members of the House of Representatives.
