MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
*- A meeting of tho committee of the Society for the Protection of W 7 omon and Children was held in tho V.M.C.A. rooms oil Thursday last. Tho president, Canon Burton, was in the chair. Present—Mesdames A. C. Sandstein, W. Wilson, J. H. Fountain, H. A. Court, Dr. E. Sands, Miss Shanks, Messrs W. H. Zouch. C. R. N. Maclcie, and tho secretary (Miss Early). Owing to illness Mrs M. H. Lissaman and Mrs F. Pratt wrote resigning their seats on the committee. Tho resignations wero received with much regret, and the secretary was instructed to write and thank these members for past services, and also express tho sincere sympathy of tho committee. On the motion of Mrs Wilson it was decided to endorse and forward a resolution received from the United Women's Committee, and enclose a letter with a. request to the Society's branches throughout tho Dominion asking for their co-operation. Twenty-five cases dealt with since last meeting were then considered.
On Tuesday last a conference was held at Rakaia between members of the Presbyterian Sabbath Schools' Association, teachers and Bible Class members. The, Rev. W. T. Todd, of Ilakaia. presided. The subject of "The relation of tho Bible Classes to the Sunday School" was introduced, and a paper prepared by Mr J. Stout was read, followed by a paper by Mr A. M. Wright. Sectional meetings were also held. The S.S. Association remained iv the Town Hall anel was presided over by the Rev. T. Tait. The subject on "The objet-t to ho attainetl in the Sunday School" was opened under three heads. "The Teacher's Preparation" was the first, and the Rev. G. H. Jupp addressee! the meeting. The Rev. J. Mackenzie hext spoke on "The Chile! and tho Home." The Rev. Aiken spoke in "Thq Teacher ns a. Soul-winner." Sennrate- meetings were also held for the Young Women's and Young Men's Bible Classes, when subjects dealing with their particular work were introducetl and discussed. After lunch the visitors were escorted to the Domain and various places of interest.
At the last mating of the Linwood Congregational Mutual Improvement Association it was unanimously resolved:—"That this Association sntv port the protest now heing mnde against the granting to private bodies of any further right?! or privileges in the Christchurch Public Domain, especially such as confer the rijrht to fence in any nortion. / It regards tho granting of such concessions as already exist as hnvine a very grave mistake, and trusts that the citizens have seen'the end of a process which, if not defimtelv abandoned in the present crisis, will, with the increasing: demands of a grrtwing population, almost certriiidv result in our Domain ultimately becominc a mere collection of virtually private enclosures.**
The monthly meeting of Knox Church Band of Hope was held on Thursday night. Mr Franklyn in the chair). The Mayor (Mr H. g- ve an interesting and instructive address, which was much aporeciated by the audience, over 200 fieing present. The following contributed items: —Piano solos, Misses M Peg and E. Bennetts; piano ciuVts, Nellie and Fred Musgrore. Miss Talbot and K. Wilkinson, and, -Misses lohnston and ialoot; recitations, Misses M. Ritchie, J. Musgrove, B Muscrove, a- d *" »'mpson; vocal duet Miss Thompson and Mr Tliwaites; vocal' solos, Misses A. Boys, Thompson, Liin T P e SS and * or d. and Mr Tbu-iTtes: dance. Miss Stark; dialogue. "Doilies Birthday," St. Albans Salvation \rmy girls. A number of pledge cards were presented during the meeting.
