POLICE SERGEANT'S FATE.

At the inquest on Sergeant Hickey, the victim of the St. Ivcs tragedy, the police gave evidenco that Brown shot the sergeant without provocation, and but for Brown's son jumping between and receiving the charge ho would havo shot Constable Barclay. Evidence was given by Brown's sons that Hickey seized Brown, and in a fierce struggle their father fared in selfdefence. [A cable message on May Ist stated that Sergeant Edwin Hickey and Constable Barclay went to St. Ivcs to servo two commitment warrants upon Thomas Edwin Brown, an orchardist, aged fifty. They found Brown at the foot of his orchard, and when he learned their business ho invited the officers to come to the house. The trio walked there, chatting amicably on route. Brown led the officers to the sittingroom, and then, turning round, asked them what they meant by coming to his house, and oruerod them out. Barclay told Brown to consider himself under arrest. The members of the family then entered the room, and- Barclay ai> temoted to seize Brown. Hickey went towards Brown, and was almost touching him, when throe shots rang out in quick succession, and a fourth a little later. Hickey collapsed immediately with three" bullets in his stomach. The fourth struck Brown's son. in the wrist. Hickey died on the way to the hospital.]"
