SNOW IN MARLBOROUGH

HEAVY MORTALITY FEARED

(special TO "the tress.") BLENHEIM, Slay 12. Rarely has such a heavy and general fall of snow occurred in Slarlborough so early in tho winter as the ono that made such a fine spectacle for tho residents of Blenlieim yesterday morning. Nearly the w-hole amphitheatre of tho ranges was covered with a winter's mantle. Reports from tho back country describe the fall as an unusually severe one. and in tho region of tho Upper Awatere and tho Wairau Valley the snow is several inches deep in localities which are not ordinarily subject to theso visitations, even in tho depth of winter. A quite unusually largo number of sheep stations, it is reported, are wholly covered, and it is feared that thero has been a great amount of mortality among sheep. The fall extended nearly to the Cloudy Bay coast.
