WHAT MR WILLIAMS SAYS OF THE BERTHING.
"I consider the work of berthing the shin a masterpiece," said Mr Cyrus J. Williams, last night, "so muoh so that in the Chairman's name and) my own I have sent a congratulatory telegram of' thanks to Captain Thorpe -for the mas-' terly way in which he handled the ship. I consider it was a perfect piece of sea- j manship. lam entitled to consider.' myself an expert in those things, and I never saw a better piece of work in my I life. The great length and weight of. the ship were big factors to consider, ♦ and tho whole circumstances of the operation were such as to try any man's ] nerve, and on© cannot but admire the • coolness displayed by Captain Thorpe | in carrying out the work. He handled: the ship like a master. Knowing Cap-! tain Thorpe as I do, I did not think there would be the slightest difficulty, , and his performance to-day demonstrated once, more his great ability in the handling of ships."
