WAIAU.
The Ist of May brought a commencement of winter, and for four days there has been a sou-west gale blowing accompanied by heavy rain, elect and snow falling on the high country. Up to Sunday night 5.94 inches of rain had fallen, and th© state of the rivers has practically blocked all traffic. Four inches of snow fell at the highest portion of the Waiau-Kai-koura road, but there was no interruption of the telegraph lines over this portion of tho routy?, the line havi,ng withstood in an excellent manner ite first severe test since being strengthened.
