SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The monthly meeting of the Sumner School Committee "was attended by Messrs D. Lumsden (in the chair), A. Biirns, C. Lawson," and Mrs C. Ferguson. The headmaster's report showed that there -were 203 .pupils on tho roll, the average attendance was 175, and the highest liX) for the past four weeks. The committee voted £5 13s 3d for the purchase of books for the school library, wluch will be subsidised £ for £, tho selection of the books being loft to the headmester. The committee sympathised with Miss Buddcn (the headmistress) and expressed regret that she had found it necessary to apply for further leave of absence owing to indisposition. It was decided to forward a fetter of thanks to Miss Leverscdge, who has acted for one month during Miss Buddcn's absence. Mr and Mrs Oliver were appointed carelr.kers of—-the school. Tho subject of Bible reading in schools was referred to by the Chairman at somo length, and considerable discussion followed. It was considered advis.iblo that all parents of school children, and especially members of school committees, should make a point of attending the meeting on the subject, which is being called by the National Schools' Defence League, to bo held in tho V.M.C.A. rooms. Christchurch, on Thursday night next, 27th inst.
Tho Tcmuka District High School Committee" met on Wednesday. Tho headmaster reported that the average attendance in the primary school was 314 and tho -roll number 375, and in the secondary department, 3S and tho roll number ' 42. It was decided to congratulate those teachers who had been successful in the recent examinations. It was agreed to order a new boll from Waddcll and Co., Christchurch. The Railways Department notified that children would be conveyed to Lyttelton to see H.M.S. New Zealand at excursion rates. The New Brighton School Committee met on Tuesday. Present—Mr C. JJ. Winney (chairman), tho IW H. T. Purer, as, Mesne Falkindcr, Redes, Skinner, Hawker, ar.d StanL'a-d. The trustee- of the Riccarton racecourse were thanked for the use of the g:ound for the annual picnic, also to those ladies who had assisted at the gathering. The hcrdmaster reported that the roll number was 373 and the average attendance 343. The matter of converting Breezes road school into a side ecliool was deferrtd. A committee was set up to consider the erection of a school bath. It visa decided to approach the Board on the matter of purchasing a section adjoining the school. The Etv. H. T. Purchaa, who ig leaving the district, was accorded a vote of thanks for his interest in the pupils of the school and their religious education.
