NOTES.

A Press Association message from Wanganui states that Matlow has been scratched for all engagements at tho Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Mooting. Bronze and Lockwood arrived yesterday morning. Acceptances for the Opotiki Jockey Club's Annual Meeting cfoso this evening. J. B. Reid has placed a couple of two-year-old' fillies, one by Charlemagne IT. —Savannah and the other by Bezonian —Pedometer, in M. Hobbs's hands. Both are beautiful fillies, and compare favourably with Mr Iteid'.s other well-known two-year-olds. Express 11., who was the best horse in tho Uruguay last year, and won 10,000 dollars, died recently from the 'effects of pneumonia. 'Ho was jusb about to retire to tho stud. In Great Britain and Ireland last year 1027 two-year-olds, 1084 three-year-olds, 023 four-year-olds, and 70-1 five-year-olds and upwards, or 3998 in all, took part in flat races. Putting the cost of keeping them in commission for one year at £300 apiece—a by no means too liberal estimate—an expenditure of £1,199,400 is represented. If the money expended in their acquirement, together with that spent in rearing or'purchasing and training of tho horses that did, not race, is added, racing may safely bo said to cost owners at Home £2,000.000 annually. It is estimated that purses aggregating ■ £1,000,000 were distributed last year in America among 5000 trotters ;amd pacers performing at 1,300 meetings on 1000 different trades.
