SPORTSMEN'S MEMORIAL FUND.
i* "Tbe Referee" to be published to-day r has the following:—ln last week's issue wo invited sportsmen throughout the Dominion to subscribe to a fund for tho " purpose of providing Christchurch with a permanent memorial of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Wo well under- . stood that the British Government 11 would liquidate tho obligations entered r j into by tho leader of the South Polo " Discovery Party, and wo knew that tho J' British Government would mako adoj quato financial arrangements for the future of tho dependents of tho dead ' explorers. Public generosity is doing ) wonderful work in raising funds which > will subsidise the pension grants from f tho Admiralty. It was hardly necesi sary, therefore, to ask New Zealand - sportsmen to augment these funds by ; what, in proportion, would be a small ; j amount. But we felt it wa.s necessary s to raise a fund from sportsmen for a permanent memorial of one of the finest I > stories in history. It was a proposal • well within the bounds of realisation, and wo are glad to cay that it has met I with generous approval, as the followj i ing list of donations received and pro- , mised will show: — DONATIONS RECEIVED. £ s. d. Mr Hugo Friedlander, Mr B. L. Lone. Mr G. 11. Staricy, Mr T. H. Loivrj-y Mr A. Loughrey, tho Linwood Cricket Club (per Mr S. A. Orchard,, Mr J. E. Henrys, Mr 11. Brinkmnn, and others who have not yet specified the nniount of their subscrptions. Tho results so far aro very gratifying, for a few days only havo elapsed since our proposal was put forward, and there has not beon sufficient time to hear from sportsmen in tlie North. We. aro especially glad to havo received a subscription from Mr G. M. Proctor, tho secretary of tl.o North Otago Jockey Clvb —tho subscription comes from Mr Proctor as a sportsman, not from him in his of-cial capac ty—because there are many racing and trotting clubs in New Zealand, and if each secretary sends something for tho Fund, one of our objects will havo been achieved. Wo want tho help of sportsmen throughout New Zealand, and wo shall welcomo tho smallest contributions as heartily as we shall receive tho larger amounts. Wo desire to sec our invitation accepted in tho spirit of sportsmanship -with which it is offered, and we aro confident of the result. Subscriptions should he addressed Christchurch Press Company, Cathedra! .square. Christchurch, and the envelopes shou'd be endorsed "Sportsmen's Memorial Fund."
