A CHANCE CALL.
Scott's career up to, 1898-9 was a mere matter of naval routine. Ho was then torpedo lieutenant on the Majestic, the flagship of the Channel Squadron, and in 1895-1900 was first lieutenant. The chance call, which has added his name to the roll of. heroes, happened in this fashion:—"Early in June, 1899," writes Scott in his "Voyage of the' Discovery," "I was spending my short leave in London, and chancing one day to walk down the Buckingham Palace road, I espied Sir Clements on the opposite pavement, and naturally crossed, and as naturally turned and accompanied him to his house. That afternoon I learned for the first timo that there was such a thing as a prospective Antarctic expedition ; two days later I wrote applying to command it, and a year after that I was officially appointed. On June 80th, 1900, I was promoted to the rank of commander, and a month later my duties in tho Majestic lapsed, and I was free to undertake the work of the expedition."
