AUCKLAND ST. HELENS HOSPITAL.

DR. LINDSAYS EVIDENCE,

(press ARSonvnos telegram.) AUCKLAND, February 5. At the St. Helens Home enquiry today, Dr. P. A. Lindsay said ho considered tho Homo in every way an admirably conducted institution. Having regard for the population and size of tho city of Auckland, ho did not think the present building a suitable ono for a maternity home. Considering the building itself, and its situation, ho thought tho Home did remarkably good work, and the results compared favourably with those of auy other maternity home. The position of the institution certainly was a very handy one, but that was about all that could be said in favour of it. He would prefer to sec it on a site further removed from tbo tram-line.

In reply to another question from tho I Commissioner. Dr. Lindsay said be did ' not think it would be advisable for tho Home to be an adjunct of the general hospital. Tho Commissioner: In your opinion, is the existing site one that should bo abandoned if a more suitable one could be obtained? Witness: Yes. The Commissioner: Do you think, in the interests of those who" use the Home, it would be a good thing to have ' a resident medical officer, whose solo ! duty would bo to look after those in the" Home? | Witness: No. I think it would be a preposterous thing to have a resident medical officer solely for tho institution. Witness, in response to a further question, said that he did not think more than one medical officer was necessary for the Home. With regard to keeping the ease books, he thought that in public institutions such as the St. Helens Homo a book should be kept regularly and as fully as possible. He did not think it would bo at all practicable for patients ' to be allowed to nominate their own medical attendants. ; J
